Ottawa police have tracked down the red Mazda RX-8 that was involved in a hit-and-run that killed a homeless man five months ago.

On July 13, 38-year-old Mitchell Anderson was crossing Rideau Street and Colonel By Drive when he was struck and left critically injured on the roadway.

The driver fled the scene and Anderson died in hospital two days later.

Investigators tracked down the red Mazda RX-8 from a surveillance video which showed the car had an Ontario license plate.

At the time of the incident, police said the car carried a man in his late 20s and a young woman with shoulder-length blonde hair.

Police say they are consulting the Crown Attorney's Office to determine if charges can be laid.
