An Ottawa man charged in a fatal 2008 hit-and-run was found guilty of dangerous driving causing death Friday.

Thirty-four year old Vlad Precup was found guilty of hitting 38-year-old Mitchell Anderson on July 15, 2008 as he crossed the street near the Rideau Centre. Anderson died in hospital two days later.

"It's been three years since I've heard anything and now I finally get to get my justice," said Anderson's daughter, Christine Dacosta.

That span of time included a hunt for Precup's red Mazda that took months, with Precup denying he had any role in the crash when police questioned him.

He was charged on New Year's Eve, 2008.

"He's now been convicted of killing someone, lying about it afterwards and fleeing the scene," said Crown attorney John Ramsay. "I think that suggests a certain amount of disdain for authority."

Because of that, Ramsay said Precup will remain in police custody until he is sentenced June 27.

Precup's lawyer said he was disappointed in the verdict, saying Precup gave a full account of what happened when asked by police.

Anderson, who was homeless at the time of the accident, had just re-united with his daughter four years earlier.
