An OC Transpo double-decker bus stopped close to a Via Rail rail train Thursday at the Fallowfield crossing stirring up memories of the September 18th, 2013 collision that killed six people.
The rail crossing arm actually came down on the bus.
Photos posted on Twitter show the OC Transpo bus over the stop line with the train passing through just metres away.
One bus passenger the bus told CTV Ottawa, today's incident was scary.
' I looked around and everyone on the bus was startled. We were just holding our breath", said Lynne Marleau.
The bus was #72.
It's the same Barrhaven route involved in the September 2013 crash when it was route #76.
VIA Rail experienced mechanical issues Thursday morning at the rail crossing at Jockvale Road and Greenbank. None were reported at Fallowfield.
VIA issued this statement on failed component at the Greenback Road crossing.
"The safety of motorists, pedestrians, as well as VIA Rail’s passengers and employees was not compromised as the systems performed safely and went into fail-safe mode as designed'.
The president of the Amalgamated Transit Union 279, Craig Watson, said the bus driver followed all proper procedures.
OC Transpo boss John Manconi also stated that the bus was over the line but driver did everything right.
"Everything we've seen, we've talked to VIA Rail, we've talked to our traffic engineers, we don't see any gaps in doing the right thing," says Manconi.
More to come.
