To promote healthy, active lifestyles Canadian Tire is donating gift cards and sports equipment to military bases across Canada during Canadian Armed Forces Recreation Month.

Monday, Chicago Blackhawks Captain and three-time Stanley Cup Champion, Jonathan Toews and Ottawa Senators Alternate Captain, Chris Neil joined Canadian Tire representatives at the Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Leitrim to drop off donations.

“It’s incredibly important that we do offer them the best moral and welfare services to allow them to partake in physical fitness, which is at the core of the military, which is being in good physical shape,” said Lt.Col. Colin Lachance, commander at CFS Leitrim.

At the base there are several locations where members of the CFS can let loose with gyms, training centres and recreational facilities. The goal is to de-stress from the high pressure situations these men and women face day to day.

“Just being active, I think that’s the starter,” said Toews. “I think obviously having the opportunity to hone your skills at something, or just enjoy doing whatever it is you’re doing, that’s a big start.”

The day included a presentation followed by autograph signing with Neil and Toews.

Canadian Tire has committed $300,000 over three years.
