Ottawa Police have charged the truck driver in last week’s collision that killed 23-year-old cyclist Nusrat Jahan.

Steven Bruce Conley, 38, has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death in the Sept. 1 collision at Laurier Avenue West and Lyon Street North.

The collision happened during morning rush hour as Jahan, the daughter of a Bangladeshi diplomat, was cycling to Willis College, where she was taking classes. She was struck by a Tomlinson construction struck and pinned underneath, only two blocks from her apartment.

Laurier Avenue West has a separated cycling lane. The death prompted public outrage and calls for the city to make its main downtown bike thoroughfare safer.

The city has pledged to bring in an outside firm to do a safety audit of the Laurier bike lane.

Conley was released and is due back in court Oct. 3.
