Roads get crowded on long weekends like this, with Ontario police focusing on four main trouble spots to try and keep commuters safe.
“The Big Four are distracted driving, so cell phone use and that sort of thing, impaired driving . . . as well as non-use of a seatbelt or improper use of seatbelts; a lot of people don’t use it properly” said Staff Sgt. Chuck Kaizer.
“(Also) aggressive driving, which involves speeding, tailgating, unsafe lane changes, that type of thing.”
Nearly 250 people have died on OPP-patrolled roads in 2012, with police across the country hoping “Operation Impact” will prevent more in the future.
“We’re trying to make our roads the safest in North America . . . there’s a connection from Vancouver to Halifax with all the police operating the same way,” Kaizer said.
“They’re trying to prevent the same things from happening, we’re all trying to prevent the collisions from happening and hopefully everyone can get to where they’re going safely.”
Provincial police also put out a news release this week reminding boaters out for one last ride to wear life jackets and stay clear of dams and generating stations.
