An Ottawa man has been charged with the murder of his sisters.
Ottawa Police say 29-year-old Musab A-Noor faces one count of first-degree murder and one of second-degree murder. A-Noor was scheduled to appear in court Sunday but would not leave his cell when his name was called. The justice of the peace has ordered a psychiatric evalulation.
The charges come less than 48 hours after the bodies of 29-year-old Nasiba and 32-year-old Asma Noor were found in their home on McCarthy Road.
"We need a lot more people like these two girls in this world and this is just so tragic to see them leave in this way," said Imam Sikander Hashmi.
More than 1,500 people gathered at the Jami Omar Mosque on Old Richmond Road Sunday to pay their respects to the women. Mourners remembered the two as kind, intelligent women who were frequently seen at the mosque and enjoyed learning about the Quran. The youngest sister, Nasiba, taught the Quran at the alternative islamic school next door to the mosque.
"It's painful. Two sisters in one family. It's just something nobody was prepared to handle and we all feel for the family," said one mourner.
Police were called to a residence on McCarthy Road near Paul Anka Drive shortly after 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2016. The initial call was for a medical disturbance, but police quickly opened a homicide investigation after the women were found stabbed to death.
Friday's murders mark the city's 23rd and 24th homicides of 2016.
