Ottawa Police are investigating the homicides of two women in the city's south end. Their deaths mark Ottawa's 23rd and 24th homicides of the year.

Police were called to the 3200 block of McCarthy Road, near Paul Anka Drive Friday night shortly after 9 o'clock. The initial call was for a medical disturbance, but police said they quickly discovered the bodies of the two women and opened a homicide investigation. It is believed the women were stabbed to death.

Friends have identified the victims as sisters Nasiba and Asma Noor. The victims were 29 and 32 years of age.

One person was arrested late Friday night in a wooded area near a railroad track a short distance from the crime scene. No information has been released about the man in custody. No charges have been laid.

Investigators were out canvassing the area for evidence Saturday, which police said was more challenging because of the weather.

"There has been a snowfall so that makes the job a little longer to do," said Insp. John Medeiros.

The Major Crime Unit is investigating.

No other details have been released.
