The first major thunderstorms of the season came to eastern Ontario and western Quebec Friday evening, with short-lived tornado warnings west and north of the capital.

There were tornado warnings in effect for the Low-Wakefield and Renfrew-Arnprior-Calabogie areas, lasting just over an hour and a half before they was lifted at 7:30 p.m.

Environment Canada has a severe thunderstorm warning in place for Ottawa, Gatineau, Upper Gatineau and Prescott/Russell as of 7:30 p.m.

There was also a severe thunderstorm watch in Cornwall.

Environment Canada says a cold front crossing Ontario Friday afternoon meant showers and thundershowers, with the risk that some could become severe.

Strong winds, hail, heavy downpours and even a tornado were possible, according to the weather alert.
