The third child that was injured in Friday's deadly house fire in Alexandria has died.
Officials from CHEO say 19-month-old Maxime Desjardins passed away Monday morning from injuries suffered during the fire.
"I was hoping that he might have pulled through . . . but I guess not" said neighbour Shannon MacMillan. "I would always see him walk in there. . . he always had this cute little smile."
This follows the death on the scene of his mother, 22-year-old Sarah Cholette, and his two siblings Chloe and Jacob.
His father, 26-year-old Martin Desjardins is the only surviving member of the young family of five. He remains in a burn unit at a Toronto hospital, far from his home about an hour east of Ottawa.
Investigators said the fire that claimed their lives started on the home's porch, cutting off their only exit.
"Alexandra's an older community, with many older buildings," said Grant Crack, Mayor of North Glengarry Township. "It's just one instance where it's very unfortunate there weren't alternative escape routes."
Neighbours called 911 around 2:30 a.m., with the home completely engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived.
The fire was so hot that it partially melted the steering wheel of the family minivan, still parked in the driveway on Monday.
Thoughts are now turning to the funeral planned for Cholette, Chloe and Jacob on Thursday, although that may change with Maxime's passing.
A nearby Giant Tiger has also raised $1,600 so far in support of Martin.
"It's going to be very hard for him, because he's going to be by himself after, so we don't know how he's going to be," said Sylvie St-Onge with Giant Tiger. "We're hoping that's going to help him to lift his spirits a bit."
