The province's Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a man was shot by an Ottawa police officer during a raid at an apartment building in the city's downtown core.

Ottawa police say the shot was fired when officers were executing a search warrant at an apartment on the 300 block of Cumberland Street at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A 36-year-old Ottawa man was shot in his right leg and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was brought to hospital where he underwent surgery.

The shooting marks the fourth time Ottawa police officers have been involved in a shooting in the last six months.

The SIU has four investigators and three forensic officers working on the case.

The SIU is called in whenever police are involved in cases of serious injuries or deaths involving the public.
