Even though food prices are going up, bargain-hunter Ron Eade reminds us there are plenty of ways to save money at the grocery store. He advises people to follow these simple steps:
- Plan ahead: Make a circuit, make a list and stick to it
- Comb flyers for sales: Use coupons, only buy what you will use
- Never shop when hungry
- Stock-up on non perishables when they're on sale
- Try no-name or off-brand versions
- Buy in bulk stores (packaging is expensive, so products are often cheaper in bulk)
- Buy frozen vegetables: Less waste, and they're likely more nutritious in winter months
- Have a vegetarian meal once a week (you will save on the cost of meat)
- Check price per unit
- Buy a whole chicken and carve it up yourself
- Canned fish often goes on sale (you can use it for sandwiches and casseroles; and the bones contain calcium)
- Chop your own veggies
- Mash your own potatoes
- Cook your own pot roast
- Look up and look down when walking down the aisles (the most expensive items are usually at eye-level)
- The perimeter of the store has the healthiest items
- Be careful: Check the expiry date on sale items
- If they're out of a sale item, ask for a rain cheque
