Even though food prices are going up, bargain-hunter Ron Eade reminds us there are plenty of ways to save money at the grocery store. He advises people to follow these simple steps:

  • Plan ahead: Make a circuit, make a list and stick to it
  • Comb flyers for sales: Use coupons, only buy what you will use
  • Never shop when hungry
  • Stock-up on non perishables when they're on sale
  • Try no-name or off-brand versions
  • Buy in bulk stores (packaging is expensive, so products are often cheaper in bulk)
  • Buy frozen vegetables: Less waste, and they're likely more nutritious in winter months
  • Have a vegetarian meal once a week (you will save on the cost of meat)
  • Check price per unit
  • Buy a whole chicken and carve it up yourself
  • Canned fish often goes on sale (you can use it for sandwiches and casseroles; and the bones contain calcium)
  • Chop your own veggies
  • Mash your own potatoes
  • Cook your own pot roast
  • Look up and look down when walking down the aisles (the most expensive items are usually at eye-level)
  • The perimeter of the store has the healthiest items
  • Be careful: Check the expiry date on sale items
  • If they're out of a sale item, ask for a rain cheque
