A new website went online Saturday for Nortel pensioners who fear they will lose out as the company restructures.
More than 900 people have already registered with www.nortelpensioners.ca and paid to help cover potential legal fees. The push to organize began in Ottawa but has expanded to Kingston, Belleville, Montreal, and five other cities.
Retired employees are concerned that Nortel will offer lump sum pension payouts to those who qualify, said one organizer. They believe this will substantially reduce the pension fund.
Several thousand Nortel pensioners are estimated to reside in the Ottawa region.
Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski recently told CTV Ottawa that significant job cuts are expected over the next several weeks.
