Hoffman's career has taken him from Renfrew to the heart of Africa. An international peace mediator, he was director of the conflict resolution program at the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia from 2000 to 2003.

He traveled to several countries to oversee peace agreements as the personal representative of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter: Romania, Ukraine, Venezuela, Equator, Sudan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Uganda.

He was born and raised in Pembroke and played junior hockey for the Lumber Kings. A father and grandfather, Hoffman and his wife returned to the Ottawa Valley near Foymount in 2004.

Before moving to the United States, Hoffman lived in Renfrew, Eganville, and Arnprior for 21 years, where he co-founded the Living Without Violence project.

Hoffman has degrees from Wilfrid Laurier University and Tufts University, and a Ph.D in architecture from York University in the United Kingdom. He also studied international peacemaking at Harvard Law School.
