An Ottawa man is lucky to be alive after getting trapped in a vehicle surrounded by floodwater in South Carolina.

87-year-old George Osterhues was travelling from Ottawa to Florida with his dog, Tila, when he accidentally drove right into the worst flooding in South Carolina's history.

“Some people were turning around and I was trying to do the same thing but I was already a little too far,” he told the television station WSOCTV on Monday, October 5th, 2015.

Osterhues told the station that the current was so strong he couldn't get out of his car and could barely move.

Luckily for Osterhues and his dog, a good samaritan was in the area checking to see if anyone needed help.

“We got to about right here and we could see his car which is all the way down there,” said Tom Hall, who braved the floodwater to save the Osterhues'.

“I saw some movement and then he raised his hand and waved at me and that kind of broke my heart because I knew at that point we had to go back and get him,” Hall told WSOCTV.

With the help of a rope, a life jacket and man power, Hall and his family were able to pull Osterhues and his dog out his car window.
