The much anticipated opening of the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge will happen this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Councillor Steve Desroches made the announcement on Twitter late Thursday afternoon.

The bridge connects Barrhaven and Riverside South.

It will have eight lanes for traffic including public transit, two bike paths and two sidewalks.

“We're really excited that it's opening on the weekend, it will be much quicker to get to Barrhaven,” said one resident.

Desroches and MP Pierre Poilievre have been championing the project from the get go.

“Both communities, Riverside South and Barrhaven are growing at a tremendous pace,” said Desroches. “We know we have to make transit improvements and take pressure off the Hunt Club and Manotick bridges."

The $48 million bridge was originally scheduled to open in 2012. That was delayed after the first construction company went into receivership.

There were also other problems, including with wielding and prep work.

Desroches said some line painting and traffic light activation is just about all that is left to do before the Saturday opening.

“It will connect 100,000 people and take traffic out of historic Manotick,” said Poilievre. “It will mean a more connected and happy community on both sides of the river."
