Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has been released from hospital following a successful liver transplant.

Melnyk has been in hospital since May when he underwent a live liver transplant from an anonymous donor.

In a statement, the team said both Melnyk and the donor have been discharged from hospital and are "doing extremely well."

“Mr. Melnyk’s recovery has been proceeding very well since undergoing his transplant,” said Dr. Atul Humar, the Medical Director of the University Health Network’s Multi-Organ Transplant Program, in a statement.

“As with all of our transplant patients, Mr. Melnyk has been monitored closely by his transplant team and his general health has improved to the point where he can begin the next phase of his recovery."

Last month the Ottawa Senators made a very public plea to find a live liver donor for Melnyk after attempts to find a donor among his group of family and friends failed.

More than 2,000 people showed interest, with 500 donor applications received by the University Health Network’s (UHN) Donor Assessment Team. More than 12 candidates were selected to go through the screening process.
