Water levels getting higher, increasing flood risk

Rising waters have homeowners in many parts of the region on edge, preparing for the risk of a potential flood.

The Rideau River is near peak flows and there have already been reports of localized flooding.

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority warns that water levels are expected to continue to rise over the next couple of days.

Officials, however, say it will likely be a few weeks until the Ottawa River reaches its peak.

Water on the rise in Ottawa's west end

There are reports water levels at Lac Dechenes in Ottawa's west end are up two feet since last week.

The City of Ottawa delivered piles of free sand to the flood-prone area, Thursday.

Britannia residents can call 311 to have empty sandbags delivered to their homes.

Raging river

Further up the watershed in Smiths Falls, CTV viewer Rob Goulet videotaped raging water on the Rideau River that sent torrents through underground rocks overnight.

Several water pumps in the area are now working overtime.

Under water for days

Meanwhile, many rural residents in Kemptville and Manotick have been under water for days.

The region can expect cooler and wetter weather this weekend which could also cause water levels to rise.

Areas at greatest risk include:

• Kemptville
• Manotick
• Old Ottawa East
• Old Ottawa South
• Britannia

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority says its flood warning will be lifted when rivers and streams have stopped rising, and short-term weather forecasts show no signs of significant rainfall.
