Halloween spirit was in full display in the capital Saturday with spooky events creeping up on trick or treaters all day long.
At the Aberdeen pavilion, dozens of people carrying colourful and unique pumpkins showed up for the first ever Pumpkin Derby.
8-year-old Angela Cachero and 12-year-old Kayley Aceton were hoping their furry cat pumpkin, Zoe, would squash the competition.
"I was nervous," said Angela.
"It is actually a copy of the cat that I have, Zoe," added Aceton. "She's a little fat, so a pumpkin is perfect."
Gourds were on the move all morning, competing in several different categories. Jose Rodrigues and black pumpkin depicting a skeleton wedding won the adult division.
"There was only one other competitor, so that's probably my winnings for today," he said.
Prizes were also awarded for the top three fastest pumpkins to roll down a ramp, best decorated pumpkin, most spectacular pumpkin car crash and best dressed race car "driver."
Over at the Billings Estate, kids and their families looking to add a bit of spook to their Halloween festivities were invited to explore tiny haunted houses, each one built to replicate Ottawa's best known landmarks.
The Agriculture and Food museum was also a popular place among families today. Their Halloween festival featured a petting zoo, pumpkin decorating and other Halloween themed activates for kids of all ages.
