Ottawa police say speed appears to have been a factor in a fatal motorcycle crash that killed a A 24-year-old man in Ottawa’s east end Friday night.
The collision happened just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Jeanne D’Arc Boulevard and Decarie Drive.
Flowers and other tributes were laid at the scene early the next morning. Witnesses of the crash were still in shock.
“I heard this big bang and I went rushing to me kitchen window and I saw a young girl running around screaming,” said Anna Marie Braithwaite. “I saw the motorcyclist…it was an awful sight.”
When paramedics arrived on scene, they found the 24-year-old motorcyclist without vital signs. He had suffered critical multi-system trauma including head, chest and abdominal injuries.
The motorcycle had crashed head-on into the side of the car causing significant damage to both vehicles.
Residents of the area call the stretch of Jeanne D’Arc Boulevard where the crash occurred “the speedway.”
“In 14 years, there have been four very bad accidents there,” said resident Adrienne Davis. “Last year alone there were two accidents on that corner.”
Paramedics tried to revive the motorcyclist on scene but his condition remained unchanged upon arrival at hospital.
His identity will not be released until next of kin are notified.
The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.
Ottawa Police are investigating the crash and no charges have been laid.
