Seventeen Ottawa residents were honoured Thursday night for efforts to help their neighbours after a deadly fire ripped through a townhouse complex in their Caldwell Avenue neighbourhood in March.

The Salvation Army has created a special honour for those residents, which is called the People Helping People award.

When the Salvation Army's emergency services team arrived on scene after the fire, they found tenants helping neighbours who lived in the community housing complex and were victims of the fire.

The blaze left two-year-old Khalid Ali dead and forced eight families from their homes.
