RUSSELL, Ont. - A Montreal-area man has been charged after police say a vehicle was clocked going more than twice the speed limit on Highway 417 in eastern Ontario.

Officers operating radar Tuesday near Russell, Ont., southeast of Ottawa, spotted a BMW travelling westbound at what police say was an "extreme high rate of speed."

They followed the vehicle at speeds that varied between 200 and 220 kilometres an hour in a 100-kilometre zone.

The car was eventually stopped when it had to slow down for other traffic.

Rayyan Salah, 22, of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que., is charged with racing a motor vehicle and will appear in court on Oct. 17.

His driver's licence was suspended for seven days and his vehicle was also seized for a week.
