In an effort to reduce the amount of people boating and drinking, Ottawa Police are joining forces with Gatineau Police and the Ontario Provincial Police for “Operation Dry Water.”

The initiative was launched by the Canadian Safe Boating Council in 2013 and takes place over the first long weekend in August.

Police say 40 per cent of all drownings in Canada are alcohol-related.

According to the CSBC, whether you are operating a boat or a vehicle, the laws surrounding when someone is considered impaired are the same.

When it comes to having alcohol on board, laws differ depending on whether you’re in Ontario or Quebec.
