An Ottawa paramedic is facing a sexual assault charge after a woman complained she was inappropriately touched while she was in his care.

Police said a woman in her 40s reported the incident after she was examined by the paramedic on Saturday.

Police arrested and charged Jean Roland Lauzon, 53, for one count of sexual assault on Sunday. He was released on bail on Monday.

"Keep in mind these are allegations but we take them seriously when someone breaches a trust instilled by the public," said Staff Sgt. John McGetrick.

Police told CTV Ottawa they decided to identify the paramedic because he was in a position of authority and similar acts may have happened to other women.

"When anyone breaches the public's trust, there's a potential for other victims. There's no reason to believe that; but it's a concern at this time," said McGetrick.

Lauzon, who has 25 years of experience, was removed from active duty immediately following the police probe.

"This is an extremely serious allegation -- one which worries me," said Anthony Di Monte, Ottawa's top paramedic. He said Lauzon has never been involved in an allegation of this nature before.

Paramedics are now conducting an internal investigation into the matter.

"People entrust us with their health and loved ones. (It's) a sacred duty we strive to accomplish daily," Di Monte said.

"We're striving to get answers . . . safety and confidence is our most important concern."

Lauzon's next court appearance is scheduled for July 15.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Ottawa police at 613-236-1222, ext. 5944 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-TIPS.
