The Ottawa Fury and the group behind Lansdowne Live are one step closer to bringing a professional soccer team to the capital.

The two groups have filed an application for a professional soccer franchise in the United Soccer League.

If Ottawa gets a first division team, it would play in a league that includes the Montreal Impact and the Vancouver Whitecaps. The plan is for home games to be played at Lansdowne Park.

The league consists of 11 teams throughout Canada, the United States and the Caribbean. League officials in Florida confirmed last month that they hope to have a team in the capital by 2011.

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk previously announced his intentions to bring a Major League Soccer team to the capital to play in a stadium yet to be built near Scotiabank Place. According to Sens President Cyril Leeder, that plan is still alive.
