TORONTO - Ontario's NDP is promising to develop a breastfeeding strategy and create four birthing centres staffed by midwives if elected Oct. 6.

Leader Andrea Horwath says she'll also stop cuts to a program that provides new moms with follow-up calls from public health nurses.

She says the initiatives will cost $5 million a year.

The NDP plan to find the money by capping the salaries of hospital CEOs at $418,000, which they say will free up about $80 million.

Party officials say the location of the four birthing centres would be based on need.
