Mayor Larry O'Brien is warning voters to make sure the councillor they elect in this year's municipal election, matches their vote for mayor.

"Whether it's me or whether it's my good friend and very competent member of provincial parliament, Jim Watson, or Alex Cullen or whoever else runs -- make sure you connect the dots between what they want and what your councillor wants because we've seen what happens when you don't connect those dots," O'Brien said during a keynote speech to the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce.

O'Brien was elected in 2006 on a "zero means zero" campaign that promised not to raise property taxes. That promise was broken and property taxes are slated to go up 3.9 per cent this year alone.

The mayor has not indicated whether he will seek a second term in office, but has said he will announce his intentions in June.

The nomination period runs from Jan. 4 to Sept. 10, and will elect one mayor and 23 city councillors. The election is scheduled for Oct. 25.
