An Ottawa man is in custody until Thursday after appearing in court to face dangerous and impaired driving charges.
Glen Carkner, 44, was arrested on the scene of a crash between a Toyota Matrix and bicycle on Carling Avenue Feb. 2 which left the cyclist in critical condition.
He appeared in court via video link Friday to face charges including dangerous driving causing bodily harm, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and assaulting a police officer.
Police said they were called to the Hampton Park Plaza area with a report of an impaired driver just after 2 p.m., then saw the Matrix hit the cyclist nearby.
"There were two separate incidents," said Sgt. Al Ferris of the Ottawa police. "One that took place at Hampton Park Plaza involving some minor collisions, the suspect and vehicle fled from there to Carling Avenue and subsequently struck a cyclist."
Staff at a nearby LCBO said they made the call to police after refusing a man service.
"He was showing signs of intoxication, unsteady obviously not looking sober by any stretch," said LCBO spokesperson Chris Layton. "Not only did our staff refuse to serve him but they called police as they observed him . . . getting into a vehicle, so the staff naturally had concern."
The 31-year-old male cyclist's belongings were scattered around the crash scene afterwards, with the silver Toyota suffering heavy damage to its windshield.
Police say any witnesses to the crash should call police at 613-236-1222.
