Hundreds of Quebec motorists have been ticketed since the province brought in a new law banning the use of hand-held cellphones while driving.

Although the law took effect April 1, police had been giving drivers verbal warnings during a grace period that ended July 1.

Since Canada Day, 34 motorists have been nabbed using cellphones while driving in Gatineau and face fines of up to $115 each.

Meanwhile, police in Montreal have ticketed more than 800 drivers.
