A teenage girl is in hospital fighting for her life after she was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash in Ottawa's west end Thursday afternoon.

Five teens were injured when the small car they were travelling in collided with a pickup truck and struck a nearby light pole at the intersection of Hazeldean Road and Carbrooke Street at about 3:15 p.m.

A 16-year-old girl suffered the most critical injuries. Ottawa paramedics say the teen was unconscious when they arrived on scene.

She was treated for life-threatening head and chest injuries and airlifted to hospital in critical condition.

Two other teens are in serious but stable condition in hospital. A 17-year-old boy suffered pelvis and internal injuries, and a 15-year-old girl suffered shoulder and chest injuries, as well as a minor head injury.

Two other teens, an 18-year-old male and 17-year-old female, are in stable condition in hospital.

Paramedics say the driver of the pickup truck was not injured in the crash.

Ottawa police temporarily closed Hazeldean Road between Carbrooke and Eagleson Roads on Thursday afternoon. The road remained closed at the dinner hour. Commuters are asked to avoid the area.
