Residents in Gatineau have started rolling their brown bins to the curb, four months after Ottawa launched its green bin composting program.

The Gatineau composting program accepts food scraps, paper towels and soiled cardboard packaging. However, the program bans diapers and plastic bags.

Ottawa's composting program also doesn't allow dirty diapers or plastic bags. However, the company that processes the city's organic waste is currently before a provincial tribunal to get permission to expand its facility on Hawthorne Road to be able to process the material.

Gatineau hopes to compost 9,000 tonnes of waste by the end of this year. Meanwhile, the City of Ottawa has a contract with Orgaworld to process 70,000 tonnes of organic waste each year.
