A fallen Canadian soldier was remembered by family and friends at a funeral service in the Upper Ottawa Valley, Monday.
Sgt. Gregory John Kruse was killed alongside fellow soldier Warrant Officer Gaetan Joseph Roberge in a bomb blast on Dec. 27. They had been patrolling an area 24 kilometres west of Kandahar city.
Kruse was from the 24 Field Squadron, 2 Combat Engineer Regiment based in Petawawa, Ont. He was serving as a member of 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment battle group.
Kruse had settled in nearby Pembroke with his wife and three daughters. Just days before his death, his wife, Jill, had sent an e-mail to a military padre, expressing her concern for the soldiers during the holidays.
Since 2002, 106 Canadian soldiers have died while serving in Afghanistan.
