Construction crews have started work on the city's segregated bike lane project on Laurier Avenue between Bronson and Elgin Street.

Crews started work on the project from Bronson to Lyon Street on Monday. Construction on the rest of the bike lane won't begin until after Ottawa's Race Weekend is complete at the end of May.

City council approved the two-year pilot project in February.

The segregated bike lane will use a median to separate cyclists from traffic. It will cost an estimated $1.3 million.

Construction is expected to wrap up by the end of summer.
