An Ottawa family got more than they bargained for after buying a bag of grapes at a local grocery store.
When Meaghan Steacy, 11, was digging into the bunch of grapes she found a black widow spider.
Steacy said she screamed after her creepy discovery.
"I thought, 'What do I do?'" she said. "It's just not a very good feeling."
The grapes came from California. The family had been snacking on them for days.
"They've been in the fridge for a week and she's [Meaghan] had bunches from them so we were really concerned," said Meaghan's mom, Chantelle Steacy.
The spider the family found is native to the southern United States. It is venomous but not deadly. Its venom could cause cramps and fever.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says people should kill spiders if they find them in their fruit rather than capture them.
It's rare to find a spider in your fruit but it's more likely to happen in the fall during the harvesting time for grapes.
