Police in West Quebec are reporting a disturbing increase in the number of drunk driving charges in 2012.

MRC Des Collins say they laid 192 charges for impaired driving last year, a big jump from 2011 when 149 people were charged.

The 2012 tally is the highest number of people ever charged with drunk driving in the region.

Police say people in the rural areas around Gatineau are taking undue risk, and the message about the dangers of drunk driving are not getting through.

On New Year’s Eve, police arrested an Ottawa man near Vals-des-Mont, driving on highway 307 with only three wheels. He was charged with impaired driving.

In another case a man in Quyon was arrested for having nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.  This is his third charge for impaired driving.
