The Ottawa Hospital will cut 35 positions including nursing positions to help balance the 2015-16 budget.

The 2.4 per cent budget cut will help balance the books with a savings of $26 million.

In a new release issued today, the Ottawa Hospital outlined the following staff cuts:

  • 5.2 full-time equivalents in nursing
  • 9.1 full-time equivalents in unionized administrative and support services
  • 4.2 full-time equivalents in other health professionals
  • 3.2 full-time equivalents in non-unionized administrative positions

The Ottawa Hospital says another 13 vacant positions will be eliminated.

Ottawa Hospital Chief Operating Officer Cameron Love says adminstration is trying to limit layoffs.

"We will not compromise patient safety" said Love.

Hospital adminstration have found $14 million cuts to date and wlll identify another $12 million in coming months.

Union staff who are losing jobs will have options such early retirement or voluntary exit package.

The Ottawa Hospital is one of the city's biggest employers with a budget of more than one $1 billion.

It has a payroll of about 11,000 employees.
