TORONTO -- Ontario is offering additional incentives to people who buy electric cars, up to a maximum of $14,000.

Current incentives range from $5,000 to $8,500 and the Liberal government announced today that is increasing to a range of $6,000 to $10,000.

Drivers could also get another $3,000 if their vehicle has a larger battery capacity and another $1,000 if the vehicle has five or more seats.

But for higher-end vehicles, priced between $75,000 and $150,000 the incentive is capped at $3,000.

This announcement is retroactive to Jan. 1, so the Liberals say anyone who bought an electric vehicle already this year can apply.

There are currently about 5,800 electric vehicles in Ontario.
