Hundreds of people gathered at the National War Memorial Saturday in honour of the two soldiers who were killed earlier this week in violent attacks.

The vigil began with the singing of O Canada, followed by a prayer and a moment of silence. Many wiped tears from their faces, and lit candles in the soldiers' memory.

"I was just compelled to come. You know, he was shot in the back and defenceless. He's a true Canadian," said Richard May.

The tribute honoured the lives of Corporal Nathan Cirillo, a reservist and sentrie who was shot and killed by a gunman on Wednesday, and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent who was killed on Monday in St. Jean sur Richelieu.

"Everyone is here to be peaceful and quiet, and sad. And to reflect," said Alex Patterson.

Vigils were held across the country today in the soldiers' honour.
