Family and friends gathered at a church in Manotick Sunday to celebrate the life of 24-year-old Christina Voelzing.

Voelzing was shot several times on Easter Sunday in Bells Corners. She was found unconscious inside a home on Sonnet Crescent around 5.a.m and rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition. It is there she died three days later.

Family friend, Paul Warren, said she was a joy to be around.

“She was a very smart girl, very resourceful, fun to be around,” said Warren.

Others were there in support of Voelzing’s family.

“I am here in support of her mom and dad. I have gone through a loss myself, and my daughter in quite ill. I know a little bit of what they are facing… I’m a believer so I’m hoping to share their faith with them, give them support, and help,” said Merv Bouwman.

Ottawa Polices said the shooting was not random – But Voelzing may not have been the target.

Many hearing she jumped into the line of fire to protect her roommate.

“I don’t know that very brave, I don’t know if I would have the courage to do something like that, but if that’s what she did God bless her soul – Very brave girl,” said Warren.

Voelzing is Ottawa’s sixth homicide of 2016. The investigation into her death is ongoing.

Donations in lieu of flowers in Voelzing’s name are being accepted for the Algonquin College Foundation for the establishment of a student award.
