A VIA train crossed Woodroffe Avenue this morning and the signal gates did not descend.

It appeared to some people who were stopped at the crossing that the signals had malfunctioned again.

It happened at the same crossing as the 2013 bus and train crash that killed six people. Since then, the signals at the Woodroffe crossing have malfunctioned several times.

VIA says the signals were working properly today but were deactivated when the train made an unscheduled stop. The train had stopped, as a precaution, before the intersection because the crew had lost communication with the flagpersons at the crossing.

In a statement VIA Rail says: "Earlier this morning, flagpersons posted at Woodroffe Avenue ensured the safe crossing of VIA Train 45, in accordance with operating rules and procedures. At no time was public safety compromised."

Those who cross the tracks along Woodroffe say more needs to be done to restore confidence in the signals here.
