Students at a Gatineau university have voted against joining a protest of rising tuition fees in Quebec.

Out of 852 votes in a referendum at Université du Quebec en Outaouais earlier this week, 465 voted against a strike and 387 were in favour.

The vote came after the province's plan to raise tuition by $325 annually for the next five years, which has led about 30,000 students across the province to skip class.

Quebec currently has the lowest tuition fees in the country for Quebec residents, with an arts program tuition averaging around $2,600.

There were around 6,000 students eligible to vote at UQO.
