Health officials with the City of Ottawa are warning residents to wear mosquito repellent when going outside after two crows tested positive for the West Nile virus.

City officials say one of the infected birds was picked up in the Manotick area and the other was found in the former township of West Carleton.

Although this is the first case of West Nile reported in Ottawa this year, three other birds in eastern Ontario tested positive for the virus last month.

Health officials say the best way to stay protected is to wear bug repellant with DEET, along with long-sleeved clothing.

Residents are also advised to clear their property of any standing water that can serve as mosquito breeding grounds.

West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause inflammation of the brain.
