Health officials are warning the public to be cautious after three birds in eastern Ontario tested positive for the West Nile virus.

Two dead birds in the Deep River area near Renfrew, and one bird near Rockland, east of Ottawa, have all tested positive for the virus.

Health officials say the best way to stay protected is to wear bug repellant with DEET, along with long-sleeved clothing.

Residents are also advised to clear their property of any standing water that can serve as mosquito breeding grounds.

West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause inflammation of the brain.
