A group of Gatineau city councillors is proposing to ban extreme fighting from city venues after several people were attacked at a mixed martial arts after-party over the weekend.

Although the mixed martial arts tournament drew about 3,000 fans on Saturday, some councillors say extreme fights should be banned because it draws the wrong crowds.

"I felt it was a bit of savagery and people were beating up on one another either until they were rendered unconscious or injured. I don't find that sportsmanship at all. The City of Gatineau should not issue permits to any establishment that promotes this kind of fighting," Coun. Frank Thrien told CTV Ottawa.

Brutal attack at fight after-party

The proposal comes after two fighters and a promoter of Saturday's mixed martial arts Freedom Fight were brutally attacked and robbed during an after-party at a Best Western hotel on Laurier Street in Gatineau early Sunday morning.

Police say the attack happened when a member of the group answered a knock at the door and nine men came into the hotel room, hitting one of the fighters on the head with a bottle and Tasering another who remained in a coma until just before the noon hour on Monday.

The fight promoter and four others also suffered minor injuries in the beating. According to police, the injured men did not know their attackers.

Supporters won't go down without a fight

In the meantime, supporters of mixed martial arts continue to back their sport, saying the Sunday morning brawl had nothing to do with the tournament.

"It had nothing to do with the sport, the sport is in the ring," said Mark Holst, a mixed martial arts champion.

"We've often seen numerous athletes, professional athletes convicted of some pretty heinous crimes and no one's talking about banning baseball or hockey," added Pat Cooligan of the Ottawa Martial Arts Academy.

While the sport may look brutal, statistics show there has never been a death linked to mixed martial arts.

"The only serious injury that I've had was a fractured foot," Holst told CTV Ottawa.

Fighting championships are currently banned in Ontario, one of only two provinces that refuse to allow such shows.
