Ottawa firefighters battle fire at Cyrville Road gas station

Ottawa firefighters responded to a fire at a gas station on Cyrville Road Monday morning.

Crews were called just before 10 a.m. for a fire at the Saab station just east of St. Laurent Boulevard.

Thick black smoke could be seen rising from the building.

"The fire had completely engulfed the mechanical shop section of the gas station but had not yet reached the fuel pumps," Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) said in a news release. "Due to the quick response, combined with the fast attack, the fire was extinguished before it could reach the gas pumps."

Crews had to deal with several hazards, including the fuel pumps, multiple propane tanks, a propane refill station, tires, and highly flammable fluids and oils inside the mechanical shop. Hazardous material crews also deployed booms to prevent contaminated water runoff from getting into the sewer system.

"A fire investigator is currently on scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire," OFS said.

Road closures were in effect in the area while fire crews remained on scene. The fire was under control by 10:48 a.m. but OFS said a fire watch was established to monitor for any flare-ups. 

The gas station's owner, Sam Abdul, said he smelled smoke Monday morning and saw the flames in the garage.

"There's a lot of inventory. We’ve got some gas in the ground. And I just left my phone inside the office and my wallet," he told CTV News Ottawa.

Since late Friday night, Ottawa firefighters have responded to 10 fires in the capital, including houses under construction in Barrhaven, a fire at a terrace home in Orléans that destroyed four units and left several people homeless and a fire in Carlsbad Springs that destroyed a home. 

"A second alarm fire in Orléans and from there it just kept going all weekend till midnight this morning," said OFS spokesperson Nick DeFazio. "We had a second alarm in Barrhaven and that was our ninth fire. This is our 10th fire so far."

Despite the destruction, no injuries have been reported.
