The Nepean Junior Wildcats abandoned their normal red-and-black colour scheme on Saturday for a cause that's affected many of them.

The junior girls' team wore pink from head to skate to support breast cancer awareness and the family members of some players who've faced the disease.

"I have two aunts and a grandmother who were diagnosed with breast cancer. All of them are still alive," said Megan Eady. "It's hard to watch your family members sick, when you see them go in and out of the hospital."

Some of the brightest young hockey stars in the province said they were doing their part for the one in nine women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.

Hundreds of people showed up for the fundraiser at the Nepean Sportsplex.

"We couldn't ask for anything better," said Rod Emby of the Nepean Girls Hockey Association.

The Junior Wildcats' captain said her message to women fighting cancer is the same as to her team.

"Stay strong and there's hope," said Hailey There's people here raising money for research. There's hope."
