Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says the provincial government will commit another $5 million to a housing program to help needy families.
McGuinty made the funding announcement for the Rent Bank program Thursday morning in Ottawa.
Renters who are faced with eviction can apply to the program, which is designed to help people keep their homes during times of need.
The aid, however, is restricted and people can only qualify for the program once during a two-year period. The financial help is also limited to enough money to cover two months rent.
McGuinty says the Rent Bank program, which started in 2004, is helping Ontario families all while saving the province money.
"People are forced out onto the street and the need to look at our shelters -- that tends to be a much more expensive proposition on a nightly basis than simply renting," he said.
McGuinty says the province is also looking at developing a long-term plan to deal with affordable housing.
