CTV Ottawa has learned that the man who shot and killed a popular CJOH sportscaster plans to live in Barrie, Ont. after being released from a Pennsylvania prison on Tuesday.

Jeffrey Arenburg, 52, was released from U.S. custody at the Fort Erie border crossing after serving time for assaulting an American border guard in November 2007.

Arenburg was interviewed by Niagara regional police when he crossed the border into Canada on Tuesday. He told them he plans to live in Barrie, where he has family. He said he will not be coming to Ottawa.

Arenburg, who is a diagnosed schizophrenic, killed CJOH sportscaster Brian Smith outside the Merivale Road television studio in Ottawa in August 1995.

Arenburg was found not criminally responsible for killing Smith. It's not known if he has been receiving psychiatric help while in custody.

In his ruling, the U.S. federal judge who issued the deportation order said he considers Arenburg a "danger to society". That's a sentiment shared by Smith's widow.

"I hope that everybody is careful with this man now out there. Jeff is not well at last glance and I know that he doesn't take treatment when he's that sick. I've been to 10 review board hearings and I know this guy and I know he is not well," said Alana Kainz.

"It was just way too soon. He killed Brian and now he's escalating into another pattern that, I hope, does not happen, that he will hurt somebody else fatally and that's why I'm speaking out."
