Kingston police are preparing for a busy weekend as thousands of returning students and other visitors descend on the city for Queen's University's annual homecoming.

Last year, hundreds of police were on patrol when about 6,500 current and former students, as well as other visitors, packed a student neighbourhood on Aberdeen Street. Fifty-seven people spent the night in police custody.

This year, a glass bottle ban will be in place and free water will also be made available.

Police estimate the extra cost of policing this weekend's event will be more than $200,000. In past years part of that tab was picked up by the university.
