A child care centre catering to the largest urban Inuit population outside of Iqaluit opened Friday in Ottawa.

The Ottawa Inuit Children's Centre, located in Vanier, is the first of its kind in Canada. Youngsters can practice throat singing or other aspects of their culture.

For parents, the program helps the challenge of teaching Inuit tradition in the country's southern reaches.

"My kids get to come here, and they get to learn the language and culture, and eat the country food that living in Ottawa, I never got to experience," said Dion Metcalfe who has two children in the program.

The centre currently has space for 26 children.

"We need to serve the cultural needs of this community and we need to respect our culture and traditions," said Jolene Bursey, who founded the program.
